  • Glad that the “old” map is back

This app is a successor to the separate apps for each island. I was a frequent user of Kauai Revealed, which I found to be very comprehensive and handy. In the new model, the app is free but the content is on a subscription basis, at $7.99 per island per year. I am fine with this model, so long as the publisher provides timely updates to the content. So far, they seem to be doing so, at least occasionally. The content is very good, as always. The developers have brought back an interactive map that is based on the maps in the book, with the exact same appearance and content. In my limited testing so far, it works great. What an improvement! I look forward to my next trip to Kauai so that I can use it in earnest. A few comments — It would be helpful if each review indicated the date on when the establishment was last reviewed. A lot of reviews haven’t changed for a long time; this could mean either that the reviewer hasn’t visited for a long time or that nothing worth mentioning has changed. The North Coast overview has a mention of the road closure beyond Hanalei. However, the individual descriptions of the attractions there don’t mention that they are currently inaccessible. You might view those pages via some other link and not find out about the closures. It would be good if all of those places were flagged as closed. The app doesn’t respond to turning the iPhone to landscape orientation. A lot of the content, such as some maps, would be better viewed in landscape orientation.
  • Has everything!

This app took me through my entire trip, from planning it months in advance to finding more places on the map while we were there! I'm glad the subscription is for a year because I like to plan ahead. It was very useful knowing exactly what was going on so we could get to everything on our list. Thanks for this app!
  • Unbelievable sights!

I can't imagine how the author found these places but I'm so glad he did! When they say unforgettable they mean unforgettable. I tried to go to as many places as possible in the adventure section of Kauai and it did not disappoint. Thank you so much!

We downloaded the maps so we could use them offline and this made our life so much easier! The instructions are very precise and we saw everything exactly where it said we would. This is the best purchase I made on my whole trip!
  • Very informative

This app didn't just tell me basic information on resorts and activities, it went into detail on the people and the story behind each place too which was incredible. I couldn't put the app down!
  • Stick to the books

    1
    By Dina Bee
While the books are great, they make it sound like the app is a companion to the books. All this specific app does is act as a portal to the apps that need purchased. The tiny amount of free content here isn’t much different from the books, it may even be copied verbatim from the books. Even as a preview for the paid apps, this falls short. All you can preview is are lists of names of restaurants and places to visit. The hotels portion is free, but doesn’t show much difference from what you find on most travel booking sites you browse for free and the aerial views can easily be found on any search engine that shows satellite views.

  • Difficult to unsubscribe

    By seashellmeshell
I’ve tried to follow the directions to unsubscribe from this app because I don’t need another year of it. But the directions aren’t working. The app itself is good but I don’t want to be perpetually giving you 8$ a year for something I no longer need.
  • Accurate and fun to read!

An entertaining read for sure and so great to have on my phone! I noticed others with the blue books but I didn't want to look like a tourist so the app worked well.
  • Great content and reviews

I love the author's style of writing! The content is all very well written with great pictures and the reviews are much different than what you would read from a large corporate site.
  • Made my trip amazing

I spent each morning of my trip with my ipad and the app to quickly plan out my day. This app made it quick and simple to find out where to eat and what to do!
  • Very trustworthy reviews

    By Julie_Baker
I am always skeptical of researching hotels because the reviews always seem to be biased and inaccurate. This app has brutally honest reviews and I've managed to avoid making the mistake of trusting big hotel company reviews available on many links online.
  • The maps are the best

I downloaded the island maps because there was limited cell service where my friends and I went surfing and hiking. Without the maps I'm sure we would have been lost!
  • Easy to use!

I have always been more of a book person than a cell phone user, but the mobile app has been so easy for me to use! I still have my revealed guidebooks with me, but the app is perfect for on the go!
  • Going backnext year

    By Sally_Scott
This app was incredibly helpful. If only there were more guides like this for every place in the world! We're going back next year and we'll make sure to have the app with us so we don't miss out on anything.
  • Will use on our next trip too!

I read the Big Island guidebook cover to cover and loved it- I couldn't believe how helpful the app was after all that info! It's great if you want to see what's nearby and will show you where the hidden gems are! Going back this Christmas this time to Maui, I'll be reading the guidebook and the app until then because I can't wait
  • Not worth it

Kind of klunky to navigate. You can do just fine with the (free) Yelp and TripAdvisor apps.
  • Massive price increase

    1
    By Superk5231
Why did the app go from an annual subscription fee of $7.99 per Island to $19.99 per Island? That is a massive price increase and not worth the value when one can just borrow or buy the book.
  • Price increase?!?

    By Holly'sFab5
This is a great app. I have the book (also great) as well as the app. That being said, what the heck? I subscribed to Maui last year and am planning a trip to different island for 2019 and the price has more than doubled. And not $2 to $5. It's 7.99 to 19.99 for a year's subscription. Ouch. Why such a large increase?
  • Rip off—Junk

    By Prisonsports
Stay with the book. Downloaded app and got sucked in to buying the content and after 2 hours at 140 MBS it still was not downloaded Imagine that. I get a response and it’s my fault or it’s my phones fault no ownership of their faulty software
  • Wish it was more intuitive

    2
    By lifezbutiful
I have been a HUGE fan of the books and used them to our trips to Big Island and recent one to Maui as well. While on Maui, saw that they had an app and hoped it would help us with directions and finding places to eat wherever we were. Unfortunately, neither of these were easy. Though we had the app, we carried the book everywhere to ensure we had all the info. I wanted to love this app as much as I love the book but was very disappointed with the lack of intuitive user location based info.
  • My battery thou doth drain

    By mdw123
My battery, my battery. The price you would’st have me pay for in-app purchase is no where the cost thou doest unto my battery. I shall deletest thine app and protest thine power usage in a review!
  • Perfect for groups!

My friends and I always disagree on what we should do while on vacation, but the map let us see what was nearby so we could all choose right away and meet back soon. Everyone was happy with it!

This app actually guides you around Hawaii. The books are well written and I'm so glad that's not lost on the app.

Thanks to the app I was able to find a resort that my whole family loved. We had some amazing views right from our room and there was so much to do!

Their apps do not allow family share. You get to put the app on two devices ... but you have to use the same Apple ID, right. Do other developers get to do this?
  • Good info. Very bad app. Map doesn’t work at all.

The old single island apps were great. This joint app is hard to use. Hard to find what you want. The map doesn’t work at all. Very disappointed.
  • Unstable App

    By bhali_2018
While I like the revealed book series and appreciate the efforts author has put in. Not very happy with the app. Few problems: Using directions from the favorites crashes the app. App randomly crashes and then won’t open unless I reinstall it. I am using big island revealed
  • Not as good as the older book.

  • No better way to plan a trip to Hawaii

    By Dchurc
This app saved me hours of research. Although I did some cross referencing, everything in the Hawaii Revealed app is spot on. No need to worry about paying for a year, it’s totally worth it. Don’t even thing of looking elsewhere to help you with your planning.
  • Didn’t Work For Me

    1
    By RezRemodel
I bought the subscription on our first day in Oahu and started using it in the morning as we ventured out to see the sights. Running the app heated up my phone (iPhone X) and drained the battery. Then, after about the second stop on our “tour” the app just crashed and wouldn’t reopen. Emailed customer service and was told to delete and reinstall. Couldn’t do that since I wasn’t on WiFi (and don’t have unlimited data) so we were on our own for the rest of the day. Tried reinstalling back at the hotel and the same thing happened again after a few minutes of use.
  • Great app It is a great app, perfect for our trip.

We are so thankful for your recommendations and reviews on all the resorts. We bought Kauai and Maui islands and it was great to have to the app for planning our trip as well. Thank you.
  • Trip to Hawaii

We had a wonderful trip to Hawaii just because my son recommended this app to have with us on our trip. We used the app whenever we had to make our choices about restaurants and dining places. Thank you!
  • Great Information, Good App

First I’ll lead off by saying this is a wealth of information about the islands that is constantly being updated and an absolute must have with the subscription to any island you’re spreading more than a day on. Beach info is updated daily with surf/snorkeling conditions which is awesome. Restaurant info is spot on. We ate at almost exclusively recommended places and never came away disappointed. The only reason I docked a star is for the app itself which, while fairly well laid out and easy to navigate, had some annoyances like a structures that were sometimes circular referencing and sometimes had multiple locations that seemed like they had *almost* the same info but were slightly different for some reason. The layout also makes it really easy to go way down a rabbit hole of links and redirects that you have to backtrack through or jump all the way home. Just made it hard to go back to that exact page you were looking for sometimes. One other quibble was that the vertical infinite scrolling effect was far too sensitive at the bottom of the page which let to me scrolling past where I wanted about 450 times on the trip.
  • Misleading

    1
    By SickOfNicknamesBeingTaken
I have the physical book, which indicated that certain things (like reviews of places to stay) are free on the app. Wrong! If I select the island in question, it takes me to a page where my only options are to either buy the book (which I already have in physical form) or preview the book (not helpful). There is no way to navigate away from this page, so no way to access this supposedly “free” feature. So either buy the book in physical form, with the knowledge that you won’t get reviews, or buy an electronic version on the app (which, incidentally, must be renewed yearly to continue to have it). For an author who chastises others for being misleading, this one is doing the same.

Because we already had the books, I was hesitant to purchase the apps for Kauai and the Big Island when we visited... but we were so glad to have them. Relied on them heavily when hiking on unmarked trails, and even when driving in areas with no cell signal. Google Maps was generally pretty good for directions, but a few times, it didn’t know where we were while this map app did. Also helpful for updates on surf conditions, closures, business hours, and finding nearby activities and restaurants.
  • What a crock!!!!

    By Picky User2
I used to have this guide is a paper copy and it was great. So I thought it would be great to have the app. I was wrong. I know I have paid for the app at least once and maybe twice but it still has most of the information locked. I get three beaches, that’s it. If I click on one of the other beaches I get a message that says, “you did buy that information “. So after spending $8 on a few scraps of information, I give up! What a ripoff!
  • Used it everyday on our trip!

The app was great. Very easy searching and map features. We bought the book and downloaded the app. The book was great to have in the car for one family member to look at, and the app was perfect for on the go and searching. More up to date and appreciated the links within. Highly recommend!!
  • 9/2018 Map Update=Best Hawaii Travel Guide Ever

    5
    By AnnB4321
I’m a huge fan of HR guidebooks and the old pre-2018 app was terrific, especially the map feature. In September 2018 they returned the map funtionality to its former glory and now I can recommend this app 100% without reservation. New features in 2018 include storm updates and if you have an Apple Watch, you can opt to receive time sensitive notifications on it. The software (and Twitter feed if you are a follower) are great at providing important news on events in the islands and guide is very well written.

This app does not work with iOS 12! Beware. I’m in Kauai and really wanted to use it. I will be asking for a refund.

Very nice resource for travels to paradise! Sold as a “companion” to the book (which I bought first), it is essentially identical to the book (as far as I can tell?), which kinda makes the book itself obsolete... so bear that in mind if you’re looking at both this and the ebook. One star subtracted because I wanted to use this both on my iPad and my iPhone... the tablet while on the plane (or lanai!), phone while out & about. It works beautifully on both devices, BUT: favorites aren’t synced! So I’ve ended up with essentially two parallel resources that I have to reconcile manually. The website says they’re working on it... but I think that’s a semi-major gap (at least IMHO). Since I’ve signed up for an account, can’t the two devices just “talk?” Overall nice work... if the device syncing worked, this would be a solid 5-star review.

Only useful with an $8 per island annual subscription.
  • Good book, bad app.

    1
    By fvr5
Two issues: first, it stops all the time when the device is moved, and asks you if you want to report a problem. So that’s annoying. More significantly, I read before I bought that I could use it on two devices. So I downloaded it on my iPad. When I tried to download it on my iPhone I had problems, and reported it to customer service. For an entire week, we corresponded trying to fix the issue, and they couldn’t. They even tried to give me a coupon code for iTunes that didn’t work—twice. Finally, I just bought a different app, and there was no apology or further attempts to refund my money. I’ve enjoyed the books for 15 years, and I would stick to those and buy a different app for driving around the island. Very disappointing.
  • App should be a purchase and not subscription

    2
    By Marks s
I do not like subscriptions but want to buy apps one time. This way also family sharing would work without needing to share my apple id. I bought the maui revealed app 3 years ago one time and that is the way it should remain for other islands.
