    whoever manages the app altered my “native” language to Chinese from English without a word (yes I am bilingual but how did they know? I’ve never posted anything in Chinese), and guess what I’m already on a VIP subscription. Like people can’t decide what language they speak or what? It also proved that they’re using private info like locations or whatever (when using the app I traveled from English speaking countries to Chinese speaking ones). This is beyond retarded.

    I’ve had this app for a day and I quite like it. At first I was worried about finding people to talk to you but you didn’t actually just posted something like a Twitter post and people will comment corrections. It’s kind of hard to figure out how to use it at first but once you find out it’s OK. I was the premium wasn’t so expensive.

    This app is neat! I joined almost 5 years ago, and I’ve learned a good bit of Japanese using the moments feature while making friends in the process. The main issue I have is with the app support. They only respond about once a day. I’ve also had to reexplain my issue multiple times throughout our 50+ email exchanges. They just seem confused, and they have yet to fix the crashing issue that began back in November after an app update. I haven’t been able to open the app for over a month now! Is deleting the only option I have left? I love the app, but it’s honestly really frustrating.

    I heard good things about this app, but it simply does not work. I downloaded it this morning, and after loading the opening screen it crashes every time; I’m not sure if this is a bug in the new release or what. I wish someone could help me. 😕

    I’ve had this issue recently where I would see the notification badge showing that I have new messages when I really don’t. I would close the app and it would be gone for a few minutes only to come back again.

    Be careful about hello talk because it has a lot of pervs both young and really old which I got harassed a lot and my friend did too so just be very cautious about the app.

    I tried VIP. Once you get VIP, your posts sometimes don’t show up. Only my followers were able see the post. I checked with another account, my post did not show up on moments tab. Don’t ever get VIP, it’s not worth it AT ALL, and it’s even worse.

    At first this app seems pretty useful for studying and meeting language exchange partners, until you get functionalities taken away and ultimately your account indefinitely suspended without any explanations. It seems though that if you are a “VIP” or a paying user that you’d be immune from this. There is absolutely no explanation. The admin will just say “your account was reported.” That’s it. They won’t say what was reported for or why. Do you think you have made all these friends that you spent a couple months chatting and studying with and then BAM! You’re account is disabled and you can NOT ever use the app on the same device EVER. Even if you change your app ID account or anything else. You are banned forever.

    I don’t understand all of the good reviews. Maybe I just had bad luck. I signed up and instantly got messages from a lot of weirdos. I ignored them. I went on to message people who I thought I could have good language chats with. None of them responded. I then received more creepy messages. All of the messages I tried to send wouldn’t send right on my phone. After all of this, I said screw it and deleted my account.

    I have been using the app for a year or so now and it has improved little by little. I really enjoy it and have made several good friends through it and definitely has helped with my targeted languages. One thing I’d love to see is the ability to post/play videos/clips. It’d make the whole social and Moments experience more fun and enjoyable. Looking forward to see what the new year might bring for this app. There’s alway room for improvement.

    I had been using Hello Talk for months and even paid for the year. But recently I cannot reply or send private messages to other users. I have tried everything to get attention of an admin and still nothing. This is a major bug, so I wouldn’t bother downloading this app.

    I had an online test for my Korean class and there was a writing portion. I used this app to ask people in Korea to proofread my answer. Someone pointed out my grammatical error and saved my life. And it all took less than 5 minutes! Get this app if you’re in need of immediate help :)

    mkay so, i’ve used this app before i deleted my account maybe one or two months ago. now i’m trying to make a new one because i struggling with my language learning and i wanted to try to talk to other people but the app is telling me that i can’t have more than one account on a device. haha, thing is, i DELETED my old account. there shouldn’t be one on there and it even says my email isn’t registered. so i don’t know if it’s my phone or the app in general but please help.

    As of the latest update from December 2018 one’s unable to send messages in this app from an ipad, when the screen is rotated. The app is pretty much useless as it is now. It’s a shame because it used to be a superb product.

    Since today’s update I can not send or reply to messages nor can I receive calls on my iPad. I’ve emailed the support team but haven’t heard back yet. I backed up my chats, deleted then reinstalled the app, but it didn’t fix anything. Help!

    They banned me for using Egyptian Arabic on a language learning app and then they asked for proof of my nationality with my passport and drivers license. Be careful on this app. I lost many friends because of their carelessness and don’t give them anything

    This app is wonderful and is the reason that I met a dear friend from another part of the world! HelloTalk also provides me with the ability to practice the language that I’m learning with native speakers and receive meaningful feedback from them. The only thing that’s unfortunate is that you have to purchase a subscription for complete benefits. However, I’m still getting great use out of the app without one.

    I started my journey of learning Japanese a month ago and searched all over for language exchange partners. A Japanese girl on Facebook recommended Hello Talk. I used the app for three weeks now, and it's the best social network I have ever joined. I spend more time here than on Facebook. It allows me to practice my Japanese and receive feedback from native speakers. I made many friends so far. I practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Japanese all through this app. It is very helpful that the app allows native speakers to correct my Japanese. People have also provided me with common alternatives to certain phrases that textbooks and apps do not provide. The Hello Talk team is very responsive. I experienced strangers hitting on me in the chat. I blocked them and was able to change my settings to where only Japanese women could find me. It doesn't help when you comment on people's Moments, because they are able to find your profile that way. The reason why I didn't rate Hello Talk with five stars is because of their language program called Hello Japanese. It introduces helpful phrases, vocabulary, and audio. However, they do not provide the sentences and vocabulary in kanji. It's all in kana, and that is not helpful. They also charge $119.00/year for the subscription, so I don't think it's worth it. Overall, I love this app and very glad that it was recommended to me.

  • They do not tell you how to cancel your VIP subscription

    My review of HelloTalk would be good, but their is a big issue that makes any of its benefits useless. I purchased a VIP subscription, because unless you already know the language you are studying well you will struggle. The VIP subscription is very useful with many cool features. The problem is that I want to cancel my VIP subscription, but keep my account. My goal of learning Spanish is going to have to wait for a few months. I am in college and at the moment getting into medical school requires all of my attention. Anyways, I tried to cancel my subscription to HelloTalk, but there is no way to cancel it inside the app itself. After doing a google search I figured out that you have to cancel the auto renewal in iTunes that apparently is automatically selected when you purchase the subscription. (Pretty convenient for them). The problem is when I view my subscription in iTunes, HelloTalk does not show up. I looked on reddit, Apple support etc. if HelloTalk had a customer support number I could call it would be great, but it seems like they do not. I canceled my Netflix subscription via iTunes with no issues. So why is this App any different. VERY DISHONEST!!!!!

    iOS just updated for me today and I no longer receive notifications for the app even though they are enabled in the settings. I love the rest of the functionality of the app but I use this app to get authentic content for my Spanish class as a teacher, so I need to know when speakers are available to speak with my students.

    Great app. Should allow the option to post videos for premium members. It’d be a useful function for serious learners and I think it’d lessen the amount of people who intend to abuse it if it’s a premium only feature. I think a thumbs up/down button would be helpful as well. Basically incorporate the only few good features off the HiNative app and then HelloTalk would be even more superior.

    I think this is one of the best apps I’ve come across in terms of language growth. Constantly cramming vocabulary down your throat isn’t fun when it comes to learning a language, but interacting with natives from other countries and exchanging knowledge is a great way to learn a language and possibly make friends!

    HelloTalk is a great app to be able to talk to foreigners, and to practice the language you would like to learn with native speakers. However, I do suggest one thing that may improve the app; we should be able to group our moments or posts. For example, what if I wanted to be an account or user that teaches others, but also wants to learn from others? I should be able to post my tutorial and guides in one section, and my personal learning in another. Thank you so much for having this app, and hope you take this into consideration.

  • My account was immediately declared ‘fake,’ so I am unable to use the app

    Within 24 hours of downloading this app, I received a notice saying that another user complained that my account was fake and that I could reactivate my account if I sent Hello Talk a copy of my passport or ID. Until I do so, I am unable to use the app to message other language learners. I expressed to customer service my problem and that I do not want to send them my personal information. I don’t want to send them my ID or passport because I have no idea who will receive my info or how it will be used and stored. So far, it has been two days of messaging back and forth with customer service because their responses are rather slow. All I want to do is use the app—I heard it was great—but how can I rate it any thing other than 1 star if I have been blocked before ever sending a message?
