Description

GyPSy Guide’s narrated driving tour for the Road to Hana, Maui is an excellent way to enjoy all the benefits of a guided tour while you explore at your own pace. There are 140+ audio points that play automatically along the scenic drive, featuring the best things to see and do, stories, tips and driving directions. Professional tour guides share advice on how to prioritize your time at recommended “not to be missed” viewpoints, suggested side-trips and places of interest. Tours work offline, using free GPS signal and location services, so no data roaming, network, or wifi is required while touring. It’s Just Like Having a Tour Guide in Your Car™ WHAT TO EXPECT: The Road to Hana is one of the world’s most scenic drives and a popular sightseeing activity to see Maui’s spectacular waterfalls, black sand beaches, bamboo forests, lava rock formations and amazing ocean views as you wind your way through 620 curves and 59 bridges. If you prefer travelling independently, at your own pace, GyPSy Guide provides the best Road to Hana tour experience, along with the freedom to choose what you enjoy; squishing the black sand between your toes at Wai’anapanapa, hiking the Pipiwai Bamboo Trail, or maybe time to enjoy an extra slice of banana bread. You can’t help but cheer on the world class windsurfers at Ho’okipa. And you won’t need to worry about photoshopping the Rainbow Eucalyptus at the Ke’anae Arboretum or the stunning contrast between blue water and black lava rock at Ke’anae Peninsular. Take a moment to cool off with a quick swim at the pristine Hamoa Beach and see where Haleakala National Park descends from the summit to the sea and the “Seven Sacred Pools” of Oheo at the end of the drive. With such a long day of exploring (expect 8-12 hours), it’s important to know the 5 “not to be missed” stops, and the many more suggestions if you have time. Part of the secret to enjoying the journey is knowing how not to waste your time, and we have tips for that as well. On the return drive from Hana, we’ll point out the not to be missed stops again as well as tell you stories about Hawaii’s fascinating history and rich culture. Please note Highway #31 ‘backside route’ is not recommended for driving. Rental car insurance void. Road can be closed for repairs, mudslides and flash floods. WHAT YOU’LL SEE: Some of the highlights along the route include; • Ho’okipa Beach Park • Paia • Ke’anae Peninsular • Wai’anapanapa Park, Black Sand Beach • Hana • Hamoa Beach • Wailua Falls • Twin Falls • Upper Waikanai Falls (3 Bears) • Pools of O’heo (Seven Sacred Pools) • Pipiwai Bamboo Trail BATTERY USAGE: ++ Continued use of GPS/Location Services in the background increases battery usage. We strongly recommend taking a cigarette style (DC outlet) car charger. Avoid using a direct connection to the USB port of a rental vehicle. IPADS: ** iPad models must include a GPS chip. Please note that Apple only install these on the iPad Wifi + Cellular models. Wifi only iPad models have limited location service capabilities and are unable to play commentary automatically. DOWNLOADING: The apps are larger in size in order to work offline. You must be on wifi to download as the store may block the download over cellular networks. ABOUT US: GyPSy Guide™ produce award winning narrated audio tours along scenic drives and road trips around the world. Enjoyed by travelers who prefer to set their own pace and itinerary on vacation, but enjoy a fun, informative and educational guided experience while driving themselves. • Must have App!

I bought this thinking worst case scenario, I would be out $6.99. Truth be told, if my family didn’t have this app, the Road to Hana wouldn’t have been the same! This is a must have app! Very informative on safety tips, where to and not to go, time estimations, and best of all... the history of Hawaii! Even my 7 year old loved it! Comedic and educational! We will be buying the other Versions as well. This was the best $7 I spent on this vacation!!! Worth way more than $7! Thank you!

Hi, we found this on a YouTube channel and I must say that this is the best travel app I have ever encountered. The information is spot on the recommendations the right ones. I wish this was available everywhere. Great job!!!

This was a fantastic guide along the road to Hana! Truly enjoyed the helpful hints and stories in this $7 app more than any actual tour I’ve ever taken. Beautiful scenery and extremely helpful to know what to see along the way. Would highly recommend.

Loved the tips and the history stories. All the warnings and disclaimers in the earlier vignettes were too long and there were too many. I loved how the gps tracked with the car. And I loved that he gave early heads up about the upcoming attractions although some were a little too early.
  • Could not have done Hāna with this app!

This app was so great! It was awesome to hear about history or specifics about each stop as well as some hawaiian history on the way back. It was really helpful for our little family exploring the road to Hana in a Jeep on our own.

Some of the ‘must sees’ were disappointing. Hawaiian History lesson was informative and enjoyable. App worked extremely well.
  • Do NOT drive to Hana without this app!

We just came back from the full drive past Hana and back. We are all (two parents and two teens) raving about how this app was ‘over the top awesome and incredibly accurate’! Made our first day on Maui feel like we had a virtual personal professional tour guide along for the ride at every turn and stop. And to have so much historical context on the return ride ... we now know so much about the beautiful culture and history of these rich Hawaiian islands. Would rave longer but I am too tired from such a special day with this app! Can’t wait to use same app family for drive up to the summit of Haleakala.. just not tomorrow?!
  • An absolute must for Road to Hana

The best money you can spend on your adventure to Hana. The recommendations on where to stop and honesty about which areas to bypass were extremely helpful for a first-timer. Would still use again for return trips too. Also learned a lot about Hawaiian history on the way home that made the drive a lot easier.
  • Great!

Worked great with no cellular signal needed. The narrator has a great voice that’s easy to listen to. Make sure to bring a car charger for your phone. I recommend you have an offline playlist of music running in the background because the narrator only speaks some of the time. When he does, your offline music will automatically lower in volume and his voice will take priority. Pretty sweet! No need to look at the screen at any point during the road to Hana so don’t sweat brining a car mount.
  • A Must-Have for Hana

This app is a necessity! Don’t do a professional tour just rent a car and hop in! The voice of the guide is really nice, and he tells stories about each spot and the island itself! We named him Dave and felt like we had a personal tour guide sitting with us!!!
  • Must Have

I couldn’t imagine doing the Hana highway with anything else. He was very thorough and gave you plenty of time before each stop. I like how he was honest about certain pull offs, what was a must see and what was if you had time. The history of the Hawaiian islands on the way back from Hana was extremely interesting and made the time go by quickly. If you get any type of motion sickness you have to have this app, because it saves you so much time searching through books or maps for upcoming stops. You just sit back and relax and he tells you everything. Enjoy the ride!!

Great tour guide!! Highly recommend if you are driving yourself. Took us everywhere we wanted and then some with little bits of history added throughout the day.

We didn’t know what to expect and the best thing we did was to download the app before our trip. Truly a lifesaver and worth every penny! Just be sure to take back up charger for your phone!

This app hands down is a precious gem! Last minute we downloaded the app, overwhelmed with our late start on the day for Hana. We named the tour guide voice Hank (we still don’t know his name haha) and boy did he ease our fears! We absolutely loved and respected him immediately on his advice on food, traffic, time saver stops but most importantly his 5 must see things to keep us focused. Also his voice is so soothing that we listened and did everything he said haha! We happily put our day in his hands. We jokingly say he saved our relationship for the day due to his fun dialogue and small gaps in silence for boring chit chat on the long drive. He made our Hana day trip incredible!!!! #Obsessed
  • Amazing Guide

His knowledgable and entertaining narration was a wonderful experience and enhanced an already beautiful trip. On the way back from Hana he kept us engaged with intriguing history and stories of Maui. If traveling independent of any tours, this is an amazing tool to supplement your experience. Also, his recommendations are spot on, so make sure you budget time to see his Must-See places on the road!

The best $6.99 I have ever spent! We used the Road to Hana tour and it was fantastic. You can spend hundreds of dollars for a professional tour or $7 and have “Hank” guide you to the best stops on your way to Hana. The tour guide not only tells you where to turn and stop for the various sites but also will give you some history. I can’t wait to see what other locations they develop. This is a must purchase for your drive.

Great experience & this app made it 10 times easier - stopping at the best spots- as he highlights the “not to be missed” sights. Also learned a lot of HI history on the ride back. Well worth the $7 paid as others were much more expensive. Worked great in the cell svs dead zones so no worries there.

We loved having this app on our drive. The concierge at the Westin recommended it, and I’m so glad he did. It was helpful, fun, relevant and had us stop at places we would have never known about. Definitely worth the money!

This was absolutely an amazing tour. Very informative and we were so happy we did this especially because we would have had no clue what to see and where to go. They tell you where to park and what is worth seeing. They also give a great Hawaiian history lesson on the way back. My family and I were sad when our tour guide said aloha and mahalo and was finished after our 12 hour journey.

We’d taken the Road to Hana before with a guidebook, but having this app was SO cool! We loved it—my teenage kids tuned in too. The easy going style of the narrator and all the amazing information were great. Highly recommended.

Wow. This app made our trip so much more enjoyable and our stops, worthwhile! Tips on where to stop were helpful and history on the way back made the drive back interesting. The narrator was pleasant to listen to. One thing that I wish it did was that it worked like a regular GPS would and showed the turn by turn instead of the whole map also starting from my origin. Other than that, would definitely recommend this...get the full MAUI GUIDE instead.
  • Nice but basic

Having traveled the road to Hana a few times, I found the app entertaining. However, it really only shows the highlights which everyone already goes to. So when using this app, your not just following the crowd, you are the crowd! It misses some great hikes and waterfalls/pools which one can either find by using some basic travel books or just being curious and adventurous yourself. It also falsely claims that doing the full round (continuing the road past Hana and the ‘seven sacred pools’ to Kuna) is not allowed with a rental car. We received confirmation from Avis that this was no problem at all. As a basic app, somewhat interesting and entertaining to listen to, but I would suggest reading up on the trip beforehand and using a regular Maui travel guide to get you around.
  • Worth EVERY penny!

Excellent app- I felt safer knowing I had a guide with me. I would recommend to anyone. It helped me make the drive to Hana and feel like I had a tour service with me.

Can’t say enough good things about the app. Works on GPS so you don’t need a cell signal which is good because you won’t have one. The road is still a challenging drive but the app gives you plenty of advance notice. We loved it!

  • Don’t spend $30 in gas without this $7 app. Better than a bus your hands down.

Top notch, would have missed so much without it, would have stopped at lame places without it, plus a good bit of history for the drive back. Best $7 I’ve spent in Maui, hands down. You spent 6k to get here with your S.O., now spend another $7 on this. AMAZING.

Me and my traveling companions absolutely loved this app. We felt like the narrator was in the car with us; guiding us to all the best spots to see on the road to Hāna. Also, what a great history lesson. We highly recommend downloading this app if you are going to take the road to Hāna.
  • Very helpful!

We enjoyed using this app. Sometimes the “must do” stops we’re very crowded, so enjoyed the other stops more. Serious question: does Tom Selleck narrate this? The narrator is great.

App provides a great narrated/guided journey to Hana. It took all the stress and confusion out of the trip and allowed us to focus on the journey and easily pick the stops we wanted to make. Some suggestions: subtle Hawaiian music during times he’s not talking. If you’re syncing to your car audio you can’t follow app and play music at same time. Would make a more immersive experience. Though I liked the ride home Hawaii history narration, it would have been nice to re pepper in some point of interest call outs as you pass them - kind of as a reminder. Something like: “passing once again such ‘n such falls on your left.” The history telling just became a little monotonous and the little ones in the car were a little taken by all the graphic accounts from the story. Mommy, why did that king stab his wife...??? What’s polygamy daddy? Would you like to have 10 wives? Sure thing kiddo... isn’t Hawai’i great! For those making this trip, one regret I had was bringing food. Wish I could have hit the roadside food stands on an empty stomach. Also, if I had to do again I would skip every stop and do his last “must-see” points of interest first (at the end of the road) and work my way backwards picking places to stop based on what time I wanted to get home. On our way out, most all the falls were nearly empty whereas when we were going TO Hana everything was crazy full.

This app made our “Road to Hāna” trip so enjoyable. The commentary not only helped us find awesome stops and adventures but it also gave us numerous facts and history about Hawaii. Planning to use the same gyPSy app for Kauai and wish I would have known about it in Oahu. A must buy for $6.99.

We used the app for our family trip to Hana. We had a wonderful trip and we owe it all to this app! It worked seamlessly even though we didn’t have cell service. It was educational too! We learned about the history of Hawaii. All the stops that were recommended were great. We will be using the other apps for future drives for sure!

This app was perfect. It had lots of great information. People should buy it instead of those darn tour busses who do nothing but make it much more difficult for those people who choose to drive.

This app made the road to Hana memorable. Nice history lesson on Hawaii and plenty of heads up so you know where to stop. I look forward to getting more tours the next time I come back to Maui. Completely worth the investment.

Our hotel concierge service recommended this app, stating that it will save a few hundred bucks over a guided tour company. Was skeptical but downloaded it and drove to Hana from Lahaina. I had Google maps running in the foreground, music app and this guide in the background. As soon as we started approaching the town of Paia, the guide (we called him Hanatard 😀) came on, and was with us for nearly 11 hours on the way to and return from Hana. We even went past Hana to the Sacred Pools and Hannatard walked us through that section as well. In addition to the the top 5 (there are a lot more) stops that he recommended, he walked us step by step on all the turns, parking spots, even some of the snack and dining areas. On our return from Hana, he gave a fascinating history lesson about Hawaii. The only small complaint that we have is that the music will not pause when he comes on which can be a bit annoying. Overall we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this app for those taking the Road to Hana! Well done indeed!!
  • Must have for the Road to Hana!!

This app was amazing! It not only gave details on the stops along the way (must do and ones you can skip) and parking for those stops, but it also gives great historical and interesting review of the history of Hawaii. If you are traveling the Road to Hana, you just get this app!!!
  • Best tour guide around

Just finished the trip and did the seven sacred pools. Did the drive a few years back and would have loved to have this ap. The directions are clear and occur early enough to pull over in time. There is no need to look at the screen, which is pretty important on this road. Btw, you have to do this drive to get a sense of the diversity of Maui’s ecosystem. Really enjoyed the history of Maui on the way back. Idk if there was one but might add an optional soundtrack between the tour prompts. The problem with the new iPhone is you have to connect the aux cord to the car to play the ap so you can’t do music at the same time. No biggy but might add value to the ap. Thought that it was cool it functioned in low cell connection areas. Good code work. We liked the narrator so much we listened to the last prompt. Thanks!
